The Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) issued a notice to suspend PointsBet’s license for five days after the operator didn’t identify and report suspicious betting activity connected to Jontay Porter’s 2024 NBA insider betting scheme.

The commission believes that PointsBet systemically failed to detect, document, or report suspicious wagering linked to bets placed on former Toronto Raptors player Jontay Porter and proposed, for the first time, to suspend an operator in the regulated iGaming market.

Dr. Karin Schnarr, Chief Executive Officer and Registrar of the AGCO, said:

“Safeguarding the integrity of sports and Ontario’s sports betting market is a top priority for the AGCO. We require all operators to have robust systems and comprehensive staff training in place to reliably detect and report suspicious activity. Our regulatory framework is clear; operators must be equipped to detect and effectively respond to integrity risks, and we will take appropriate action when these standards are not met.”

Suspicions of insider trading involving Porter first arose in early 2024, when the AGCO ordered all licensed sportsbooks to reveal if they had offered bets on the player or noticed irregular betting patterns. According to the AGCO, PointsBet responded after a huge delay and told the commission it hadn’t offered bets on Porter.

In October 2025, after the U.S. Department of Justice released documents showing that the Porter case was part of a bigger scheme, the AGCO instructed all operators to reconfirm their responses. As a result, eighteen months after the initial statement, PointsBet admitted that it had offered bets on Porter.

PointsBet has the right to appeal the suspension to the License Appeal Tribunal (LAT) within 15 days.
