Land based gambling makes up almost 40% of the Colombian market

During 2025, land based gambling once again became the segment that contributed the most resources to the subsidized health system. With an estimated  COP $378.268 billion transferred from the monopoly revenues, bingos and casinos represented 39% of the total collection in the gambling industry.

The president of Coljuegos, Marco Emilio Hincapié, explained that the increase in revenue is mainly due to the entity’s efforts to combat illegal activities and to regulate the market.

“In 2024, localized games contributed $345.875 billion, almost $33 billion less than last year. This increase of 9.3% in transfers to health demonstrates that the industry is still going through an excellent moment . . .” said Hincapié.

In a press release the president of the entity explained that, through Virtual Sports Betting (ACDV), localized games are expected to improve their offerings and become more attractive to bettors.

Today there are nearly 109,000 legal electronic slot machines across more than 3,700 authorized establishments in the country.

“This revenue increase would not have been possible without our relentless strategy against illegal operations. Only in 2025, we confiscated 3,047 illegal gaming elements in 95 control actions carried out in 15 departments: something never seen before in the entity,” Hincapié indicated.

He concluded: “We hope that this year, with strategies like the Machines for Peace, localized games will continue to increase their transfers for the health of those Colombians most in need.”

In February 2024 Coljuegos issued a resolution to legalize illegal slot machines owned by small businesses. Speaking at the time  Hincapié, said that the strategy aims to promote legal betting and formalize around 100,000 slot machines operating in Colombia which do not currently meet legal requirements. In the resolution published in February slot machines are referred to by their Spanish acronym METs (máquinas electrónicas tragamonedas).

The ‘Mets for Peace’ program is inspired by President Gustavo Petro’s ‘Total Peace’ concept. New rules on illegal slots are aimed at reducing the flow of capital from criminal activities such as extortion and drug trafficking associated with illegal gambling.
