Denmark’s online sports betting scene is entering a period of recovery after notoriously low participation rates in 2025.

The latest market activity report by the Danish gambling regulator, Spillemyndigheden, has highlighted that sports betting revenue went up 14% YoY in November, for a total value of DKK 265m (£31m).

This is a stark contrast to the metrics just a month prior, when sports betting GGR for October went through a 50% YoY free fall.

Elsewhere, online casino revenue went up by 27% YoY, ending November at a total of DKK 375m (£43.9m). Combined with online betting, the total remote gaming revenue was DKK 767m for that month, up from the DKK 655m for the same period in 2024.

The retail sector is a different story, however. Revenue from land-based casinos came in at DKK 30m – a 3.42% decline YoY. Meanwhile, gaming machine revenue stagnated at DKK 95m.

It is easy to see the trend here – online usage is going up while less people are going to casinos. This is backed by additional data, which showed the proportion of land-based spending in November dropped from 8.7% to 7.2% YoY.

These metrics can be altered significantly this year as a result of intensifying calls in Denmark to reduce the visibility of gambling – especially around sports betting advertising.

Denmark’s media watchdog has previously cautioned that a total of 767,000 gambling ads were aired on TV and radio in 2024, which it said was five times more than in 2012, when the market was first liberalised.

Looking to raise the standards around player protection and market transparency, Spillemyndigheden recently submitted a request to the European Commission to review a number of proposed changes to the country’s gambling regulations, which would significantly expand the regulator’s supervisory and enforcement powers.
