New licence to start on 1 January 2026 for Spielbank Wiesbaden
Following the conclusion of a Europe-wide tendering procedure, the current operator of Spielbank Wiesbaden, Spielbank Wiesbaden GmbH & Co. KG, will continue to operate the casino beyond the turn of the year. The new licence, which will come into force on 1 January 2026, will initially run for ten years and can be extended once for a further five years.
This means that one of the most traditional casinos in Germany remains in familiar hands. Wiesbaden’s mayor and head of economic affairs Christiane Hinninger (Alliance 90/The Greens) spoke of an important signal for continuity and planning security. The continuation of the cooperation creates a reliable framework for the next ten to 15 years.
The operator side was also satisfied. Managing Director of Spielbank Wiesbaden Andreas Krautwald emphasized that the successful cooperation with the state capital would be continued and that the company wanted to continue on the path it had chosen.
Mayor Gert-Uwe Mende (SPD) referred to the special role of the casino for the city. The casino has been in existence since 1771, making it one of the oldest casinos in Germany. For generations, it has shaped Wiesbaden’s cultural and social life.
The story also includes the Russian writer Fyodor Dostoyevsky, who processed his gambling experiences in Wiesbaden in literature and thus gave the casino international fame.
The award procedure had already started in spring 2024. The city’s central requirement was to maintain the proven game concept. In the future, classic casino games will continue to be offered in the historic wine hall of the Kurhaus, including roulette, blackjack and poker.
The city’s society also benefits from continued operation. The annual fees of the casino for projects oriented towards the common good will be retained in full. These include, among others the Rheumatism Prize for the promotion of medical research, the Jawlensky Prize in the field of culture, the Prize of the Casino Wiesbaden as part of the international Whitsun tournament, as well as the support of Sporthilfe.
In the future, there will be an additional financial contribution for ecological measures as well as projects in climate and species protection.
In addition, the city and operators continue to attach particular importance to player protection and addiction prevention, which are to remain anchored as an integral part of casino operations.
With the renewed concession, Wiesbaden is focusing on continuity and stability. The decision creates long-term planning security for operators, employees and the city – and at the same time ensures the continued existence of a casino that has been part of the identity of the Hessian state capital for over 250 years.
