India-facing daily fantasy sports (DFS) platform Dream11 has announced its pivot away from online gaming and towards becoming a sports entertainment brand.
The Dream Sports subsidiary will now focus on being a “second-screen sports entertainment platform”.
In addition to creator-led live match watch-alongs, the platform will also offer a social platform for customers to interact with each other, as well as a free-to-play fantasy sports product.
The pivot comes four months after Indian parliament passed the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill in August, outlawing real-money gaming, fantasy sports, poker, rummy and online lotteries in the country.
A Dream Sports statement read: “With this pivot, Dream11 continues to live up to its mission to ‘Make Every Match More Exciting’, enabling sports creators to host and create content that is unique, entertaining and unfiltered.”
At the time, Dream Sports announced it would suspend operations in India, alongside several other operators, including Flutter.
Dream11 served as the title sponsor of India’s national cricket team while another Dream Sports brand, My11Circle, is the fantasy rights holder for the Indian Premier League.
Harsh Jain, co-founder and CEO of Dream11 and Dream Sports, said: “No sports fan should ever watch a match alone.
“Now, our 250 million users can take their sports engagement to the next level with watch-alongs that enable sports creators and fans to share their raw and unfiltered emotions before, during and after every match.
“We want to give all sports fans an opportunity to be heard and seen by millions of others. And this time, we are making it from India, for the whole world.”
