Announced late last year, Kangwon Land has added further details to its long-term development strategy to transform High1 Resort in Jeongseon, Gangwon Province into a major integrated resort destination. The K-HIT (High1 Integrated Tourism) Master Plan allocates three trillion won through 2035 to reposition the property from its mining-town legacy toward a broader entertainment and wellness hub.
Originally developed on the former Sabuk coal mine, High1 Resort has played a central role in regional revitalisation since 1998. The new master plan targets 13.2 million annual visitors and 3.6 trillion won in projected yearly revenue by expanding leisure, accommodation, cultural and outdoor amenities.
A substantial share of investment, around 71 per cent, will support the creation of the Grand Core Zone. Its centrepiece, the Grand Dome, will be a 300-metre-long, 100-metre-wide and 80-metre-tall indoor structure linking previously dispersed facilities. The all-weather complex will incorporate a media tower, indoor gardens, musical fountains, multipurpose arena, K-culture studio, theme park and a new Grand Casino under a single roof.
The plan is intended to strengthen Korea’s domestic integrated resort offering amid increasing regional competition. High1’s mountain setting and four-season outdoor environment form key components of the resort’s strategic positioning, offering natural landscapes that contrast with urban or reclaimed-land developments in nearby markets.
Seasonal programming will expand around the existing High1 Ski Resort, which opens its season earlier this year with groomed slopes, beginner routes and extended snow-play areas. Indoor facilities will include upgraded pools, water slides and all-season recreation zones.
The resort will also broaden its wellness portfolio. High-altitude facilities combine indoor programmes, such as yoga, meditation and sound therapy, with a forest-based healing zone offering guided walks, aroma foot baths, night-sky observation and other nature-focused experiences.
Cultural amenities continue to grow, including Unamjeong, a hanok-style café that has become a popular filming and tourism location. Additional offerings include seasonal tea services, transparent dome viewing spaces and curated culinary experiences.
Kangwon Land will preserve and reinterpret its mining heritage through the upcoming M650 culture park, scheduled to open next June at the restored Dongwon Coal Mine. The site will serve as a living history centre with exhibitions and performances honouring the region’s industrial past.
Visitors can also explore the Haneul-gil trail, part of the Untan Godo mountain route, featuring restored mining landmarks such as Dorongi Pond and the Sabuk mine entrance. The trail connects natural scenery with markers reflecting the area’s historic ties to the coal industry.
