Break Clean manifesto by Fincore promoting clean system architecture in gaming

Fincore has introduced Break Clean, a new industry initiative designed to raise engineering standards and support long-term platform stability across gaming, iLottery and sports betting. The announcement is accompanied by the Break Clean Manifesto, which explores the growing operational burden caused by legacy systems and the rising cost of maintaining ageing technology.

According to the Manifesto, 38% of technology budgets in the gaming sector are now consumed by legacy maintenance, leaving operators “spending more to stand still than to move forward.” The document argues that technical debt is not a failure of engineering teams but a natural by-product of real-world pressures such as deadlines, inherited architectures and the demands of live operations.

Mateja Popovic, CEO of Fincore, said the sector must recognise the long-term impact of outdated platforms.
“Too many operators are held back by messy stacks and fragile integrations that slow them down. What concerns me most is the amount of budget being spent simply to keep systems on life support instead of moving the business forward. Technical debt happens naturally in fast-moving environments, it’s not a failure of the people doing the work. But it does compound. Break Clean is about giving teams the clarity and confidence to start fresh, without disruption or blame.”

He added: “Break Clean is our call for a higher standard. If this industry wants real progress, the backbone systems must be engineered clean, transparent, and reliable from day one. Operators deserve clarity, not codewashing; confidence, not compromise.”

The Break Clean Manifesto notes that many operators rely on ageing systems for critical processes such as onboarding, payments and compliance. Three-quarters cite legacy infrastructure as a major cause of downtime and degraded player experience. It also references global technical debt exceeding $1.5 trillion, placing heightened pressure on regulated sectors to modernise without destabilising live environments.

Break Clean outlines a shift toward clean, modular and auditable architectures, designed to reduce integration risk, accelerate delivery and restore trust in core systems. Rather than presenting modernisation as a disruptive rebuild, the initiative positions it as a move away from brittle, patch-driven designs.

Fincore reinforces this stance through its delivery record, supporting more than 20 national and state lotteries and over 30 commercial gaming brands in 25+ regulated markets, with all contracts delivered successfully.
