888 will pay a financial penalty of £86,843 after a Gambling Commission review found self-exclusion shortcomings at the operator.

The evoke-owned brand was found to have breached Social Responsibility Code Provision 3.5.3 which relates to self-exclusion.

Specifically, the regulator said the licensee had failed to adhere to paragraph three of the code.

Paragraph three of the SRCP reads: “Licensees must take steps to remove the name and details of a self-excluded individual from any marketing databases used by the company or group (or otherwise flag that person as an individual to whom marketing material must not be sent), within two days of receiving the completed self-exclusion notification.”

The Gambling Commission said the failing was due to human error but did not provide specific details around the shortcomings.

“The Commission also notes the licensee had, and continues to have, policies and procedures in place regarding SRCP 3.5.3,” the regulator stated.

The Gambling Commission also noted that 888 cooperated throughout the investigation and that the firm had taken remedial action to address the situation.

The latest enforcement action comes after 888 was hit with a £33,075 penalty by the Gambling Commission in August.

That penalty also related to the SRCP and its conditions on the identification of individual customers.

888 had self-identified the issue and “proactively reported” it to the Gambling Commission.

Again, the regulator said 888 had cooperated with the investigation and taken action to remedy the failings.

Earlier this week, EGR first reported that Playbook Gaming had surrendered its UK licences after receiving a £250,000 penalty from the Gambling Commission.

The historical failings between August 2023 and August 2024 came when the licensee was operating a B2C and white-label model. It has since shifted to a sole B2B strategy.

EGR has contacted evoke for comment.
