Veikkaus is planning to create up to 28 new roles and positions as part of its reorganisation efforts ahead of Finland’s gambling monopoly coming to an end.
The state-owned operator is set to face off against foreign commercial competition from 2027, when the country’s gambling market liberalises.
Veikkaus will retain some of its monopoly rights under the new model, but other operators will be able to become licensed and offer online sports betting and casino in Finland as part of the shift.
Veikkaus said it was planning to create between 22 and 28 new as part of the changes across three business functions.
As it stands, 75 Veikkaus employees are within the scope of redundancy talks, which could lead to job losses or “unilateral changes to essential terms of employment”.
According to the operator’s current estimates, between 20 and 31 employees could be made redundant, with a further 20 to 30 staff having their contracts altered.
Those talks remain ongoing and are set to last for another three weeks, unless there is an agreement made to increase the negotiation period.
Veikkaus said the changes were being made to “strengthen the company’s competitiveness” ahead of the market opening.
“The company aims to remain the market leader in the Finnish gambling sector in the coming years,” Veikkaus noted.
Reija Laaksonen, Veikkaus executive vice-president of people, culture and communications, said the changes would allow the operator to succeed in the commercial market.
She added: “Competition will certainly be very tough, as many signs already indicate.
“Veikkaus is a strong company that will succeed in the competition, but as an organisation, we must transform to meet the new situation.
“When targeting possible measures, Veikkaus will pay particular attention to the requirements of business operations and ensuring competence in line with Veikkaus’ strategy. Any measures will be implemented in accordance with applicable legislation.”
In September 2024, Veikkaus engaged with more than 600 staff over potential redundancies.
