Koi Nation’s dream of Sonoma County casino over as federal judge strips land of trust status

The Koi Nation tribe of Northern California has failed in its attempts to develop a resort casino in Sonoma County with a federal judge ruling that a 68-acre parcel of land is stripped of its trust status.

The ruling is a huge victory for the Federated Indians of Graton Rancheria, who had opposed the competition around 11 miles away from its Graton Resort & Casino near Rohnert Park.

“The Koi Nation has fought for generations for a land base upon which to secure a future for the Koi people,” the tribe said. “The order removing our restored homeland from trust status is deeply disappointing, though our resolve is unwavering: we will continue to fight for justice through our appeal to the Ninth Circuit. In the end, we are confident that justice will prevail through our appeal,” the Koi wrote.

The ruling supported several claims by Graton claims, including that the Interior violated federal law by not consulting with the tribe and that it incorrectly concluded the Koi have significant historical connections to that land.
