Genting UK is planning to transform part of the historic London Trocadero into a new entertainment and leisure venue, featuring a casino, restaurants, and bars. This development aims to revitalise approximately 37,000sq.ft of currently vacant space within the Grade II-listed building on Coventry Street.
The Trocadero has a rich history as an entertainment hub in London’s West End. Originally opened in 1896 as a restaurant, it has undergone various transformations, including serving as a cinema, amusement arcade, and shopping complex. Notably, it housed SegaWorld in the 1990s, a large indoor theme park and arcade that was a significant attraction during that era.
The Genting Trocadero is due to open October 2026, with planned use including a casino, restaurants and bar facilities, all designed to support both local economic growth and visitor appeal. A central component of the proposal is a casino occupying parts of the ground and first floors, together with portions of the basement, which will also house staff and back-of-house operations. The gaming floor is designed to be up to 16,000sq.ft in size.
To align with comparable venues in the Leicester Square area, which includes The Hippodrome, Empire Casino Leicester Square and Horizons Casinos, it is proposed that the casino will operate 24 hours a day – creating what has been described as a ‘London Strip’ of casinos. In the UK, Genting currently operates 28 core venues (including four Mayfair casinos).
Complementing the new casino, food and beverage amenities are planned across multiple levels. On the ground floor, a restaurant will face Coventry Street; on the first floor, a more formal restaurant is proposed which can function both independently and in conjunction with the casino operations. Additional F&B provisions are anticipated in the basement, primarily to serve patrons of the casino.
Design and heritage considerations are integral to the proposal. Rather than a full rebuild, the development will proceed via a sustainable retrofit, one that preserves the historic fabric of the building, particularly its architectural façades and listed features, while upgrading the internal environment for modern usage. The intention is for upgraded shopfronts and signage that enhance visual coherence and quality along Coventry Street, and for public realm improvements in collaboration with the building owner.
Operationally, the proposal includes robust governance of the casino’s interface with the community. Security measures such as 24/7 CCTV coverage, door staff, and a comprehensive casino management plan are anticipated to ensure visitor safety, neighbour amenity, and responsible operations. The target demographic is described as age 25+, and the design is intended to support inclusive, diverse patronage.
In terms of economic impact, the development is projected to generate significant employment, up to 350 jobs in hospitality, including opportunities for training and advancement, especially for young adults. It is presented as a multi-million-pound investment into the West End, with potential to aid wider regeneration of this portion of Coventry Street.
