Portugal’s licensed online gambling operators reported a combined GGR of €287m (£248.7m) in Q2, representing a 9.6% year-on-year (YoY) increase.
The report, released by the Portuguese regulator SRIJ, also showed GGR was up against Q1’s return of €284.7m.
Sports betting revenue during the reporting period was up 5.7% YoY to €109.2m, although the vertical did suffer a 5% quarter-on-quarter decline.
Sports betting stakes were down 1% YoY and fell 8.9% versus Q1 2025.
Football continued its dominance as the most popular betting sport in the Iberian market, accounting for 67.7% of all stakes.
The FIFA Club World Cup was the most popular competition during the period, followed by the Portuguese Primeira Liga.
Both Porto and Benfica featured in the international club tournament hosted in the US over the summer.
Porto were knocked out in the group stage, while Lisbon-based Benfica were beaten by eventual champions Chelsea in the round of 16.
Tennis was the second-most popular sport based on stakes (21.8%), with basketball (6.5%) in third.
Online casino GGR jumped 12.2% YoY to €177.8m, with the return also representing a 4.7% increase versus Q1. Online casino stakes leapt 15.4% YoY to €5bn.
Online slots were the most popular game type during Q2, accounting for 79.1% of all stakes.
Banca Francesa (French banking) (7%), roulette (5.3%) and blackjack (4.5%) were the next most popular games based on stakes.
SRIJ said there were 4.9 million active players in Portugal, up 9.9% YoY, with new registrations hitting 211,000.
As of 30 June, there were 326,400 self-excluded players in the market, an increase of 27% YoY.
On the regulator’s Q2 efforts to push back against the black market, the body sent 97 closure notifications and instructed internet service providers to block 110 sites.
