Phil Ruffin to open Gilley’s in Kansas in December

Kansas will see the opening of a new casino in December with Phil Ruffin, an American businessman who owns the Treasure Island Hotel and Casino and Circus Circus Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas planning to unveil Gilley’s at the former Wichita Greyhound Park.

Gilley’s will offer about 1,000 historical horse racing machines, a sports bar, an arcade and Gilley’s Saloon & Dance Hall.

As well as a state-of-the-art gaming floor, Gilley’s will offer a first-class racebook. Sports fans can catch every game, every play, every day at Golden Circle sports bar; or visit Hi Score, an area that delivers nostalgic fun with arcade classics, golf simulators, bowling, and more. Live entertainment takes center stage at Gilley’s Saloon & Dance Hall and spills out onto a sprawling, open-air venue built for music festivals, rodeos and events under the stars.

“I have been a personal friend of Mickey Gilley and family since the early 1990s, and it led me to bring the Gilley’s experience to Las Vegas,” Ruffin said. “Now, with his wife Cindy Gilley leading the company, I’m bringing the iconic brand to Park City, Kansas — guaranteed to be the best entertainment destination in the region.”

Construction of the casino got underway three years ago after the state awarded Ruffin a historical horse racing license.

Tim Merrill of the Ruffin Co. said: “The original budget was $54m and we’re sitting at $142.5m right now. Originally, we thought the scope of the project was a very simple re-do. In reality, all the plumbing had to be replaced, the roof had to come off, we added 20 feet to the back of the building, a $2m warehouse on the side, out-buildings, re-dug the ponds and got rid of — drained the water. It’s been a sizable change in direction since we’ve been going. They added pickleball facilities outside and an 18,000-square-foot patio with family activities for people in the community. We’ve added a lot to the scope of the project which has really ballooned the cost. Whether you’re chasing jackpots, dancing the night away or just kicking back with great BBQ and a cold one, this is the place for you.”

Park City Mayor John Lehnherr said: “Here, there are equal parts of people going out of Park City each day as there are people coming into the city. Gilley’s will be a place where everyone will feel welcome and find their spot.”
