Indonesia has warned TikTok and Meta to take stronger action against harmful gambling content and remove it without any government order.
Indonesia is strictly monitoring the gambling market. Recently, the country targeted e-wallets tied to iGaming and, in cooperation with police, suspended 811 bank accounts.
With this new move, Deputy Communications Minister Angga Raka Prabowo conveys the main message that platforms must remove such content proactively, without waiting for government orders, or face penalties including fines, temporary suspension, or being removed from the list of registered electronic platforms.
Angga stated:
“They must comply with the rules because our goal is to protect this country. Penalties in the rules are reprimands, fines, temporary suspension, revoking of access, or even kicking them out of a list of registered electronic platforms. The impact (of disinformation) is chaos… And people do not receive accurate and complete information.”
The government has scheduled separate meetings with TikTok and Meta later this week and plans to contact YouTube’s local team or representatives to bring them into meetings or discussions about content moderation, disinformation, or gambling-related content.
