DraftKings has announced that it will stop accepting credit cards as a form of payment across its sportsbook and casino platforms in the US.

The operator will no longer accept credit card deposits from 25 August, as it looks to protect players from the added costs associated with the payment method.

In an email sent to customers, DraftKings said: “We’re reaching out to let you know that, effective August 25, DraftKings will no longer accept credit cards in the United States as a payment method for sportsbook or casino.

“The change is intended to help customers avoid cash advance fees and higher interest rates often associated with this payment method and otherwise improve the deposit experience.

“As a result, any stored credit cards will no longer be available for sportsbook or casino deposits after August 25.”

Per the correspondence sent to its customers, credit cards will still be eligible for use with DraftKings’ daily fantasy sports (DFS) offerings.

Last month, DraftKings was hit with a $450,000 (£335,452) fine in Massachusetts for allowing its players to make deposits with credit card funds.

The Massachusetts Gaming Commission (MGC) outlawed credit card spending for online gambling in April 2023, a month after DraftKings entered the Old Bay State.

The regulator discovered that DraftKings had permitted 1,160 bets funded by 242 credit card deposits.

These wagers were placed by 218 customers who spent a total of $83,667.92, with DraftKings self-reporting the violations to the MGC on three separate occasions.

Credit card funding for online gambling is also prohibited in Iowa, New Hampshire, Oregon, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Illinois and Vermont.

A DraftKings spokesperson said: “DraftKings has made the strategic business decision to remove credit cards as a deposit option for sportsbook and casino in the United States.

“Customers can still fund their DraftKings Sportsbook and casino accounts using debit cards, bank transfers (ACH), wire transfer and payment platforms like PayPal, Venmo or Apple Pay (with an eligible payment method, such as a debit card) where permissible.”

Earlier this month, DraftKings was awarded one of the two untethered licences to operate in Missouri when its sports betting market goes live in December 2025.  The second licence went to Circa Sports.
