The Netherlands Gambling Authority (KSA) has issued a warning to TonyBet after the operator offered illegal betting markets in the Dutch market.
TonyBet offered odds on both the winner of the Ballon d’Or and the winner of the Club World Cup’s best player.
Netherlands-facing operators are only permitted to offer betting markets on “objective, verifiable performance within official sporting events organised by recognised national or international sports organisations”.
As the Ballon d’Or and Club World Cup best player are individual prizes awarded via a vote or jury decision, they don’t fit into the parameters of permitted sports betting markets per Netherlands legislation and are therefore illegal in the country.
The regulator stated it had contacted TonyBet regarding the offerings, with the operator attesting it had received no bets from Dutch players on either market.
A KSA statement said: “TonyBet offered bets on the winner of the Ballon d’Or and the winner of the Ballon d’Or [best player award] for the FIFA Club World Cup. This is illegal under Dutch law.
“TonyBet has stated that it will be more vigilant in the future regarding the offerings made through its sportsbook platform.
“The KSA is currently issuing a warning. However, it emphasises that gambling providers are responsible for their own betting options, even if they are provided through a third party.
“If an incident occurs and an unauthorised offer has been made, providers must report it to the KSA.”
Last month, the KSA sent warnings to three unnamed operators over anti-money laundering (AML) failings.
The regulator also reprimanded the trio of operators behind the Casinoscout website, which was found to be advertising illegal gambling platforms to Dutch players.
