Former Detroit Pistons guard Malik Beasley has been evicted from his apartment in downtown Detroit, as financial troubles mount amid an ongoing FBI betting investigation.

The eviction order was filed in the 36th District Court and follows two lawsuits against Beasley from his landlord for failing to pay rent this year.

As reported by The Detroit News, Beasley has failed to pay a collective $21,500 in rent and failed to respond to the second lawsuit that accused him of failing to pay $7,355.

Beasley is currently a free agent as talks over a $42 million, three-year contract with the Pistons were put on hold following the news that Beasley was under investigation over suspicious betting activity on his prop betting markets.

Beasley ‘Staying Humble’ as Troubles Mount

Beasley continues to train in the hope that he can resume talks with the Pistons or attract the interest of another NBA team to offer him a contract. He posted on Snapchat on Wednesday: “I’ve been grinding my ass off. I’ve got this new chip on my shoulder of, like, ‘F the world.’ My back against the wall. Nobody believes in me.”

He added: “I will be better than last year. I’m staying humble. I’m still getting my work in. I have to. I gotta be prepared to either come back to the Pistons or…there’s some other teams interested as well.”

The ongoing investigation that derailed his contract talks centers around suspicious bets on Beasley to record fewer than 2.5 rebounds in a game against the Portland Trail Blazers on January 31, 2024, when he was playing for the Milwaukee Bucks.

Beasley went on to record six rebounds in the game, and his attorney, Steve Haney, played down the allegations that his client may be guilty of any wrongdoing. Haney commented: “An investigation is not a charge. Malik is afforded the same right of the presumption of innocence as anyone else under the US Constitution. As of now, he has not been charged with anything.”

Haney did not respond to comment when contacted by the Detroit News regarding Beasley’s eviction.

Calls for Prop Bet Bans Amid Betting Investigations

In addition to Beasley’s career being put on hold by a betting investigation, fellow NBA player Terry Rozier is also still the subject of an ongoing federal investigation, despite being cleared by the NBA.

In Rozier’s case, bets were placed on the unders in his prop markets, which were paid out as winners after he exited the game in question due to a foot injury after just 10 minutes.

In addition, two Cleveland Guardians players have been put on leave by Major League Baseball over suspicious betting activity in their games. In response to the growing number of pro athletes involved in betting scandals, Ohio Governor Mike DeWine has called for a total ban on prop bets.

The state already banned college prop bets amid a series of betting scandals, as well as a rise in abuse of college athletes by disgruntled bettors.

Further details in Beasley’s case have yet to emerge, but as the investigation remains open, it places increased financial pressure on the player. NBA sides are unlikely to take a risk on signing the 28-year-old despite his impressive numbers for the Pistons last season.

Beasley was one of only three players who finished the regular season with at least 300 3-pointers made, joining Anthony Edwards and Stephen Curry. He finished runner-up in Sixth Man of the Year voting, averaging 16.3 points a game.
