The Resolutive Council of the Superintendence of Gaming Casinos (SCJ) of Chile authorized the requests to relinquish operation permits submitted by the company Enjoy for the casinos located in the communes of Coquimbo (Coquimbo Region) and Pucón (La Araucanía Region).
In both cases, the Undersecretary of Finance and president of the council, Heidi Berner, the Undersecretary of Tourism, Verónica Pardo, the president of the Commission for the Financial Market, Solange Berstein and the governors of the regions of Coquimbo and Pucón voted in favour of the requests. The Undersecretary of Regional Development, Francisca Perales, abstained.
The operator companies Casino de la Bahía S.A. and Casino del Lago, owned by Enjoy, will cease operations of the Enjoy Coquimbo and Enjoy Pucón gaming halls, respectively, within a period of three years.
In the case of Enjoy Viña del Mar, operated by the company Casino del Mar, the vote was postponed to the second week of August at the request of the Governor of Valparaíso, Rodrigo Mundaca, in order to hold a technical meeting to resolve doubts regarding the evidence related to this request.
According to a SJC press release the gaming casino employees located in Viña del Mar, Coquimbo, and Pucón number a total of 1,110 workers, of which 310 and 211 belong to the last two communes, respectively.
Following the approval of these resignations, the SCJ will need to start new bidding processes for those communes. Once the applicant projects are submitted, a technical evaluation of the projects will be carried out, in which regional governments and municipalities will play an active role.
Regional governments must express their opinion regarding the commune proposed by the applicant and the impact on regional development, and municipalities must evaluate the impact and logistical feasibility of carrying out the project in the commune.
In April Enjoy requested the resignation of its operating permits in Coquimbo, Viña del Mar, and Pucón, awarded in 2018. According to local press, the three venues represent significant costs for the company as it undergoes a reorganization process.
Regulations have been amended to permit casinos to request the termination of their licenses without the requirement to pay guarantee bonds. However these regulations include an exceptional waiver that takes effect three years after its approval. During this time, each casino that chooses to take advantage of this option must continue operating while fulfilling all its economic, legal, and regulatory obligations.
