Brazil’s Secretariat of Prizes and Betting (SPA) granted Loterias Caixa a 5-year sports betting and iGaming license, authorizing it to operate 3 new brands.
Loterias Caixa, the lottery arm of state-owned bank Caixa Econômica Federal, will launch BetCaixa, MegaBet, and Xbet Caixa in Brazil’s online sports betting and gambling market.
The license marks the government’s direct entry into the market, which was previously dominated by private operators. According to the SPA, the license covers both online and offline channels.
Caixa, with its tech partner Playtech, will host a presentation on August 11 at Rede Loterérica stores in São Paulo to explain the operational model to retailers. The event aims to gather feedback from lottery agents.
Loterias Caixa stated:
“This is a time dedicated to listening to the network. We want to understand their reality, listen to their experiences, and gather contributions to jointly design a proposal that generates value for everyone.”
However, the launch of Caixa’s betting brands comes at a time when Finance Minister Fernando Haddad criticized the decision to allow online betting in Brazil, saying that it “should never have been allowed.”
Through Loterias Caixa, the company already manages Brazil’s official lottery products and is one of the largest public financial establishments in the country. This move into online sports betting will start a competition with private operators, some of which are already forming a new betting union in São Paulo to represent their collective interests.
