BetBlocker has surpassed 100,000 active users in 2025 across its Android and iOS apps, with founder Duncan Garvie noting the milestone would not have been possible without the help of stakeholders in the industry.

The free-to-use blocking software app has added several new language capabilities over the past 12 months, including Serbian in May and Portuguese last September to help drive its global coverage.

The charity is partnered with a host of operators, regulators, charities and other industry stakeholders, which Garvie told EGR had been paramount for BetBlocker’s success.

Garviesaid the charity could not have achieved what it has done alone, while it is finding increasing usage in countries where the sector is pushing the app to players.

“We’re breaking through now because of the relationships we’re building with other stakeholders in the sectors,” he stated.

“Charites, regulators, treatment providers, operators; they’re all helping us to reach a wider audience.

“It’s very clear that there’s significant demand for support when people know the service is there. But we can’t do this alone.

“We’re seeing our user numbers skyrocket, specifically in countries and states where we have other stakeholders championing our service and letting users know how to access our support.”

Garvie added that the fact the app is free, and that sign-ups can be completed anonymously, had also helped drive uptake.

He said: “100,000 unique active users in less than six months tells us a few things. Blocking software has traditionally been thought of as challenging to convince users to engage with.

“I’ve lost count of the number of stakeholders I’ve spoken to in the sector who have worked with blocking software in the past and been really underwhelmed when the see the data on uptake of the service.

“The assumption has been that blocking software is not something that many players will consider.”

BetBlocker was founded in 2017 and was granted UK charity status in 2019.

It is available on the aforementioned Android and iOS, as well as Windows, Linux and Fire OS. The tool blocks users from accessing URLs that are tracked in its in-house database.
