Michel Groothuizen, Chair of the Netherlands Gambling Authority (KSA), has been appointed to the board of the Gambling Regulators European Forum (GREF).

Founded in 1989, GREF is a non-profit organization that brings together European gambling regulators to exchange knowledge, foster cooperation, and align strategies through open dialogue and expert working groups.

Michel Groothuizen has been unanimously appointed as a board member of the GREF for the 2025-2027 term. Groothuizen joins the GREF board as a general member, working alongside a team of respected European regulatory leaders, including:

  • Isabelle Falque-Pierrotin – Chair of GREF and the French ANJ.
  • Anders Dorph – Director, Danish Gambling Authority.
  • Tim Miller – Executive Director, UK Gambling Commission.
  • Sarah Kelly – General Counsel, Alderney Gambling Control Commission.
  • Kinga Warda – Chief Officer for Policy & International Affairs, Malta Gaming Authority (MGA).
  • Magali Clavie – President, Belgian Gaming Commission.
  • Atle Hamar – Director General, Norwegian Gaming and Foundation Authority.

The KSA noted that Groothuizen “looks forward to a pleasant collaboration with other countries in the coming administrative period,” with a personal mission to contribute to establishing common standards in gambling supervision across Europe.

In a LinkedIn post, Groothuizen described the appointment:

“The GREF is a useful partnership for supervisors. I am therefore happy that I have been elected to the board of this club for the next two years. A great opportunity to continue working on a safe and fair market. But above all, I am going to try to arrive at broadly supported minimum standards that will put a floor in the market everywhere in Europe.”

Groothuizen succeeded René Jansen as Chair of the KSA in July 2023, bringing to the role a strong background in law and public administration. Before his appointment, he served as Deputy Director General of the Dutch Custodial Institutions Agency (DJI) for four years.
