The European Gaming and Betting Association (EGBA) calls on Romania to adopt a national gambling self-exclusion system, highlighting consumer protection needs in the country’s expanding iGaming sector.
Speaking with Romania’s Antena 3 TV channel at a recent event held at the Romanian Parliament, EGBA Secretary General Maarten Haijer noted that 17 EU member states already operate such systems, calling a unified self-exclusion tool a “crucial player protection measure.” The event, hosted by Romania’s online gambling association AOJND, focused on the importance of regulation in ensuring safer gambling environments.
EGBA recommends a government-run register covering all licensed operators, land-based and online, with real-time enforcement, GDPR compliance, and easy user access via a secure portal. It also advocates for exclusion periods with defined durations and the removal of self-excluded players from marketing databases.
Haijer concluded that aligning Romania’s approach with EU best practices would boost consumer safeguards and build a more responsible gambling ecosystem.
