Google docs collapse section was a highly desired feature introduced by Google recently. This collapsible section in Google Docs will create and use more digestible contents. In this post, we will learn how to enable Google Docs collapse section easily with the below two options.
- Option 1: Enable Google Docs collapse section with pageless setup.
- Option 2: Google Docs collapse section using Show outline.
Quick Guide
- Go to File > Page setup > Pageless > Set as default > OK
- Highlight all your headings in the text, and select Heading1 or Heading2 from the tool bar.
Option 1: Enable Google Docs collapse section with pageless setup
Step 1: Open a blank Google Doc

Step 2: On the top menu, click File > Page setup > Pageless > Set as default > OK


Step 3: Type your texts and headings. To make the headings as Google docs collapse section, we have to highlight the heading text and select heading from the toolbar as shown below. Repeat this step for all the headings, we can select any heading sub-level. For e.g. Heading 1, Heading 2 or Heading 3

Step 4: Once we have selected all the required headings, we can see the collapse icon on the left of the headings.

Option 2: Google Docs collapse section using Show outline
We can enable collapse section option only in the pageless setup. If we need collapse section with page setup, we can use Show outline option for easy document navigation. In this section, we will look how to enable show outline option.
Step 1: Enable the page setup. Go to top menu File > Page setup > Pages > Set as default > OK


Step 2: In the menu bar, click View > Show outline. Now in the document on the left side, we can see the Summary and Outline pane.


Step 3: Highlight all the heading texts. You can use ctrl key to highlight all the headings at once.
Step 4: From the top tool bar, change the Normal text to Heading 1. You can select Heading 2 or Heading 3 also as per your requirement.


We can use the headings navigation in the Outline panel to move around the heading quickly in the Google Docs.
