In this article we will look into 4 different ways to make fractions in Google Docs. Below are the 4 options to write fractions in Google docs.

  1. Using Equation
  2. Using Special characters.
  3. Using Automatic substitution
  4. Using MathType app

Option 1: Add Fractions in Google Docs using Equation

Step 1: From the top menu bar click Insert > Equation

Step 2: Click the fourth drop-down link, and select the fraction equation.

Note: This will open up equation bar just below the task bar (you can check in the first image with yellow circle, where with no equation bar).

Step 3: Enter the numerator digit and press tab or enter key.

Step 4: Enter the denominator digit and press enter.

You can select the fraction and customize the font size and color as we do for other texts from the tool bar.

Option 2: Add Fractions in Google Docs using Special Characters

Step 1: From the top menu bar select Insert > Special characters

Step 2: On the right-side of the pop-up window, type fraction in the search box, and select the required fraction from the left box.

Option 3: Add Fractions in Google Docs using Automatic substitution

Step 1: Google Docs by default has some auto substitutions for widely used fractions. We can check the default auto substitutions from Tools > Preferences > Substitutions (Tab)

Step 2: We can just type the numerator/denominator and press enter, it will replace it with the fraction.

Note: To add new fraction, it will not work when you copy and paste. The option 1 is the best way to insert fraction in Google Docs as it gives us flexibility to enter whatever number you want.

Option 4: Using MathType to insert fraction in Google Docs

Other than above 3 options, we can also use MathType available in Google Workspace. This is a paid app and comes with 30 days free trial. If you will be using fraction and other mathematical equations, I would recommend to invest in this great tool, which has over 52 million downloads.

Step 1: Go to the Google Workspace’s MathType portal. Click Install.

Step 2: Select Continue and select your Google account.

Step 3: Click Allow to give this app permission to use your Google account, and click Done to complete the installation.

Step 4: Go to Google Docs and open a new black document.

From the top menu, select Extensions > MathType > Open MathType > Open MathType (from the right-side window)

Note: If you already have a Google Docs open before you installed MathType, it may not show up. Just close the Google Docs and open it again to show MathType app under the Extension tab.

Step 5: It will open-up MathType window, you can select the fraction equation and type your numerator and denominator and select Insert button in the right bottom.

You can use arrow key to move between numerator and denominator.

You can uncheck the “Use by default current font and size” to format your fraction number using MathType tool bar in the top-right of the pop-up window.

Option 2 and Option 3 can be used for quick insert, but it limits to select only per-defined values provided by Google Docs.
