Gross internet gaming and sports betting revenue in Michigan reached an impressive $284.3 million in November, marking a 35.9% increase from the same month last year and a 12.1% rise from October, as per the Michigan Gaming Control Board (MGCB) report released on December 17.
### Igaming Sets a New Record in Michigan
Mirroring last month’s performance, igaming emerged as a standout for Michigan operators in November. The gross receipts showed a 28.9% rise year-on-year, setting a new record of $225.9 million, up 2.4% from October’s figures. Adjusted gross receipts were reported at $203.3 million, a 28.8% increase from last year and a 2.4% rise from the previous month.
In November, BetMGM and MGM Grand Detroit surpassed FanDuel and MotorCity Casino, securing the top position with gross igaming receipts of $59.7 million and adjusted receipts totaling $53.7 million. FanDuel and MotorCity followed closely with $57.0 million in gross receipts and $51.3 million in adjusted receipts. DraftKings, alongside the Bay Mills Indian Community, completed the top three with gross receipts of $41.6 million and adjusted receipts of $37.4 million.
### Record Online Sports Betting Achievements
In the sports betting arena, November saw gross receipts of $58.3 million, which represents a significant 72.0% increase from last year and a 76.7% rise from October. Adjusted gross receipts for sports betting reached $37.1 million, an extraordinary 264.8% increase from October, far exceeding the $294,810 recorded last year.
A new high was set for online wagers, with $650.2 million bet in November, surpassing the previous record of $613.4 million set in December last year by 6.0%. The overall hold of gross receipts was calculated at 8.97%, while the adjusted receipts hold stood at 5.71%.
### FanDuel Returns as Market Leader
FanDuel, in partnership with MotorCity Casino, regained market leadership with gross receipts of $22.1 million from a wager total of $245.6 million, achieving a 9.0% hold. DraftKings and the Bay Mills Indian Community maintained second position with $18.4 million from $182.8 million in wagers, reflecting a 10.07% hold. BetMGM and MGM Grand Detroit recorded $9.7 million from $93.8 million, resulting in a 10.34% hold.
Other noteworthy performers included ESPN Bet and Hollywood Greektown Casino, which generated $2.4 million in gross receipts from a handle of $31.3 million, with a 7.7% hold. Fanatics, in collaboration with the Lac Vieux Desert Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians, reported gross receipts of $4.1 million from a $36.6 million handle, achieving an 11.20% hold.
Operators collectively contributed $44.4 million in taxes and payments, comprising $42.5 million from igaming and $1.9 million from sports betting. Additionally, tribal operators directed $5.2 million to governing bodies.
### Recovery in Land-Based Casino Sector
The land-based casino sector showed significant improvement as compared to the previous year, following the cessation of strikes in November 2023. According to MGCB, total revenue from Detroit’s three commercial casinos reached $108.4 million, 37.0% higher than the previous year and 5.3% up from October. This revenue includes earnings from slots, table games, and retail sports betting.
Table games and slots generated $106.4 million, while retail sports betting contributed $1.91 million. Players wagered $21.0 million on sports at these three casinos. MGM held the largest market share at 46%, followed by MotorCity at 31%, and Hollywood Casino at Greektown with 23%.
The casinos paid a total of $8.6 million in gaming taxes to the state and $13.2 million in wagering taxes and development agreement payments to the city of Detroit. An additional $72,376 related to sports betting taxes was paid to the state and $88,460 to the city of Detroit.
