English golfer Marco Penge has received a three-month suspension from the DP World Tour due to his involvement in betting on various golf events.
An independent disciplinary panel discovered that the 26-year-old had engaged in gambling activities, violating the PGA Tour program regulation 3(a)(i). This regulation prohibits any individual connected with the sport from placing or directing others to place bets on the outcome, course, or any aspect of professional or elite amateur golf events worldwide.
The investigation clarified that Penge did not wager on his own matches or on the progress of tournaments in which he was a participant. Consequently, the panel determined that the integrity of the events Penge was involved in remained intact.
Based on the severity of Penge’s actions, the panel decided on a three-month suspension, with one month suspended for 12 months, contingent upon any further breaches of the regulations. Additionally, Penge was fined £2,000.
His suspension began on December 13 and will conclude on February 13, 2025, after which he can resume competing in DP World Tour events.
A statement from the organization noted, “The disciplinary panel acknowledged Penge’s prompt admission of the breach and his cooperation throughout the investigation, which was considered in determining the final sanction.”
The panel consisted of Philip Evans KC (chair), sports administrator Les Vernon, and Legends Tour member Simon Khan. The DP World Tour has no further comments on the situation.
Penge, currently ranked 414th globally, has accumulated career earnings of €357,078 (£294,721) and participated in 40 tournaments. His victories include the Rolex Challenge Tour Grand Final in Mallorca, Spain, and the Open de Portugal in 2023.
Penge is not the first golfer to face consequences for betting on the sport recently. Last year, Vince India and Jake Staiano were suspended by the PGA Tour for similar activities.
