The online gambling sector faces distinct challenges in terms of diversity, often being seen as male-dominated.
Yet, it is vital to understand that the discussion about diversity extends beyond women’s issues—it is a concern that spans the entire industry and needs men’s involvement as allies.
Similar trends are observed in igaming, where hiring practices tend to favor candidates with previous industry experience, who are predominantly men. This ongoing trend of hiring individuals from similar backgrounds fosters a cycle of sameness.
However, according to Statista, the gap between men and women who gamble isn’t vast, with 32% of women participating in gambling activities compared to 40% of men.
Moreover, in 2022, 20% of new igaming businesses were led by women, according to advocacy group Prowess.
Nevertheless, the underrepresentation of women in the industry misses the commercial potential of a wider target audience.
It’s not about masculine versus feminine
Enhancing representation goes above and beyond implementing policies. It entails fostering a culture of inclusivity and authenticity.
I support women presenting themselves genuinely, challenging descriptive and prescriptive biases, and dispelling the outdated notion that leadership is inherently masculine.
The importance of visible role models is immensely significant. The absence of diverse representation in leadership can foster the misconception that certain roles are inaccessible to specific groups.
This is why advocating for more visibility and inclusion at all business levels is crucial. For women considering a career in igaming, I say this industry offers a unique opportunity to leverage transferable skills and enhance your professional portfolio.
It’s also important to recognize that the responsibility of inclusion isn’t solely on men. Women must also take the initiative. Embrace the uncertainty that comes with pursuing roles, understanding that rejection is part of the journey.
The presence of more women in leadership doesn’t threaten an individual’s position. In fact, increased diversity in leadership expands perspectives, opens new opportunities, and drives meaningful progress.
At QiH Group, we are committed to nurturing an environment where everyone, regardless of gender, is empowered to succeed. This commitment promotes inclusivity and fuels innovation and sustainable growth for our organization.
Furthermore, I prioritize mentorship and the sharing of knowledge. The mentorship model highlights the importance of leadership representation and fosters an environment where learning from failures and opportunities is encouraged. Women should feel empowered to define success on their own terms.
The conversation about representation must also include men, as their involvement is crucial for advancement, and they too benefit directly from it.
We witness this in industries like hospitality or medicine, where the growing presence of men in roles traditionally held by women has transformed perceptions and opened opportunities in areas some men prefer, rather than being confined to traditional roles.
As men learn to embrace roles that allow for greater opportunities, they help create spaces for women to step into leadership positions. This comprehensive approach to diversity benefits not only women but enriches the entire workforce.
