Lawmaker puts forward bill to limit gambling advertising in Mexico

To protect minors from the influence of advertising related to casinos and betting, Federal Deputy Jericó Abramo Masso has introduced a bill aimed at restricting the transmission gambling advertising during family-friendly hours, especially during sports events broadcast on both free-to-air and pay television.

The legislator noted that there is currently a strong presence of betting and electronic casino ads in sports broadcasts, which exposes children to messages that, he claimed, can be deceptive and create false expectations about financial rewards.

He explained that these campaigns often present gambling as an easy way to get rich, a narrative he considers false.

The legislative proposal stipulates that this type of advertising may only be broadcast during nighttime hours, after 10:30 PM, in order to prevent minors from being exposed to content that could affect their emotional and psychological development.

The deputy emphasized that betting companies may continue promoting their services, but they must do so outside family hours.

The bill was referred to the Board of Directors of the Chamber of Deputies, where it will be analysed in committees before potential discussion in the plenary.

The push for advertising reform comes after as Mexico is seeking to tighten its rules over betting. Recently Mexico’s Tax Administration Service (SAT)  announced the guidelines through which it will monitor online and real-time games, betting, and digital casinos.

New rules, which were announced this month, will also cover ATMs from financial institutions that sell tickets for games and betting activities The measure is part of tax reform and seeks to close gaps associated with money laundering, tax evasion, and irregular operations in Mexico.
