Lawmakers call for action over online betting bill in Chile

Uncertainty continues to define the online regulatory landscape in Chile with lawmakers now calling on the government to act. Ahead of the new Chilean Primera A season, Deputy Roberto Arroyo, a member of the Sports Commission, and elected member of parliament and former national basketball figure Patricio Briones have voiced concerns about online betting companies becoming the primary sponsors of Chilean clubs.

Deputy Arroyo stated, “Given the start of the Primera A championship, where all teams are sponsored by betting companies, it is important to note that the Chilean legal framework is clear regarding the illegality of operators that do not have express authorization to operate in the country, according to the Supreme Court. However, we face a serious problem because those who have to oversee and enforce this law do not do what is required.”

The lawmaker said that it was time  “to urgently move forward with a bill to regulate sports betting and its advertising. We have two bills stuck in the Senate for several years; one is the prohibition of betting advertising in football clubs, and the second is the regulation of betting companies.”

Patricio Briones, said that the situation could no longer continue. “As an athlete and elected representative, I believe we cannot have a professional activity operating in a legal vacuum or, worse, challenging justice. We need total transparency in Chilean sport, but this is not just about prohibiting for the sake of prohibition; it is about regulating, establishing fair tax burdens, and, above all, ensuring that the financing of sport is ethical and legal,” Briones stated.

The deputies agreed that the start of the 2026 season should be a turning point for lawmakers to push through the regulations that are currently stalled in the senate. They argue that new laws will enable tax collection and create effective safeguards to shield children and youth from betting advertising, while giving Chilean football clubs legal certainty.

In August 2025 Chile’s Senate approved the project aimed at regulating online betting platforms. The bill received 27 votes in favour, three against, and five abstentions. According to a government press release the initiative would continue its detailed analysis in the Joint Committees of Economy and Finance to expedite processing, with a deadline for amendments set for 12:00 PM on September 29. However there has been no word on the bill since then.

In November Chile’s Supreme Court ordered major internet companies operating in Chile to block access to all illegal online betting sites within five days. This ruling, makes effective a decision made at the end of the previous month. The Supreme Court established that only Polla Chilena de BeneficenciaLotería de Concepción, and Teletrak have the legal authorization to offer online gambling, deeming other platforms illegal.
